A Quick Introduction to Disc Golf
The Gloucester Trail Course at Severn Lodge is a delightful addition to our many onsite activities. Disc golf, also known as Frisbee golf, combines the strategic elements of traditional golf with the casual, accessible nature of throwing flying discs (discs are far less than golf clubs, and most courses are free). The objective is simple: complete each hole in as few throws as possible, aiming to land your disc in the target basket.
Disc Golf Equipment and Rules
Although there are a few different ways to play disc golf, the game has several consistencies. To begin your disc golf journey, you only need one or more baskets and a set of discs specifically designed for the sport. Disc types include drivers, mid-range discs, and putters, each serving a different purpose. Guests can rent or purchase discs from us, ensuring you have everything you need to get started.
Once you have some discs, it’s time to familiarize yourself with the rules of disc golf. Similar to traditional golf, players take turns throwing their discs from designated tee areas, aiming to reach the target basket in as few throws as possible. You must stand behind the previously thrown disc lands, and whoever has the least throws wins. Depending on the rigidity of your play style, there are a few rules about the placement of discs that go out of bounds. For example, if the disc flies off the fairway into the woods, some players will allow you to move the disc to the nearest spot on the fairway, while others are less forgiving.
Disc Golf Techniques
Learning to play disc golf is one thing, but getting better requires dedication to learning different throwing strategies and understanding disc dynamics. The most basic techniques are backhand throws and forehand throws, each offering its own advantages and challenges. New disc golfers typically start out throwing in the way that feels best. Still, learning how to throw both ways allows you to guide the disc in different directions based on how it’s spinning. There are also different ways to hold the disc upon release, known as “hyzer” and “anhyzer,” that will greatly affect its trajectory. Finally, putting is a short-distance throw that is usually done from an underhand position.
